Abstract

The open press has paid scant attention to the naval fight over Ukraine. However, naval engagements in Russia-Ukraine War 22, proved unexpected results. A deeper understanding of narratives built by Ukrainian and Russian Leadership provides insight into the optimal utilization of naval power and how future conflicts will unfold in the naval domain. In light of this, the present study aims to develop an understanding of the discourse produced by the armed forces on both sides using Fairclough’s 3-D model to analyze the emerging dynamics in naval warfare. The paper concludes that naval conflict in the Black Sea fluctuated, always serving as a backdrop to the conflict on land. Since there are important lessons to be learnt, the propensity to disregard the naval battles in the Black Sea must be overcome.
